USDA Web Soil Survey

A free online tool from the USDA that maps soil types and properties, including drainage class and depth to bedrock and water table.

The Web Soil Survey is a public tool from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. You draw an area of interest on a map, and it returns soil types and properties, such as drainage class, depth to bedrock, depth to a seasonal water table and how the soil behaves under foundations. Soil explains why one Nashville yard stays soggy and another drains fast, and it helps with choosing between a French drain, a dry well or a pump.

We are a private waterproofing company and are not part of the USDA. The survey gives general soil information for an area, not a test of your exact spot, so we use it as a starting point and confirm with a site visit and, when helpful, a simple soak test. We encourage you to explore the tool yourself and bring questions to us.

Questions

USDA FAQ

No. It gives general information for mapped areas. A site visit shows the details.

Can it tell me if a dry well will work?

It offers clues, such as drainage class. A soak test is the better check.
