Basement French Drain Systems

Basement French drain systems that collect water at the footing and wall base through a perforated pipe in stone, then carry it to a sump pit or outlet.

A basement French drain is a buried pipe in a bed of clean stone that gives groundwater an easy place to go. Inside, the pipe runs along the base of the walls under the floor edge. Outside, it sits beside the footing. Water that would have built up under the slab or crept through the wall joint drops into the pipe and travels to a sump pit or a daylight outlet. Many older Middle Tennessee homes have tile that is clogged or was never installed at all.

We check the walls and floor with a moisture meter, then decide whether an interior channel, an exterior footing drain or both make sense. Interior work cuts a trench along the wall base, sets perforated pipe on stone, adds cleanouts and patches the concrete. Exterior work opens the soil beside the footing and lays pipe with fabric around the stone so fine soil does not clog it. We route the pipe to a sump pit, a gravity outlet or a drywell as the lot allows, and we flush and test the line before we cover it. Homes around Nashville often sit on clay and limestone, and both can send water along the footing and under the slab.

Inside, outside or both

The right layout depends on whether water comes through the wall, the joint or from under the slab.

Stone and fabric matter

Clean washed stone with fabric around it keeps silt from clogging the pipe.

A drain needs an outlet

We plan where the water goes before we dig, whether a pit, a daylight pipe or a basin.

Flushable by design

Cleanouts let the line be flushed and checked years from now.

Questions

Basement French Drain Systems FAQ

What is the difference between a French drain and a sump pump?

The drain collects and carries water. The pump lifts it out of a pit when it cannot flow away by gravity.

Do old drains need replacing?

Not always. We can camera or flush some lines first and tell you what we find.

Can a French drain fail?

Silt, roots and crushed pipe can block one. Fabric, clean stone and cleanouts reduce the risk.

Where does the water go?

To a sump pit with a pump, to a gravity outlet or to a drain basin, depending on slope.

Can I add one to a finished basement?

An interior drain needs floor access. We discuss options for finished rooms.
