Grading and regrading that reshape the soil around your house so surface water slopes away from the foundation, with clean soil, compaction and fresh sod.
Soil next to a foundation settles over time. Backfill sinks, mulch builds up and the slope that once carried water away may now carry it toward the wall. Even a few inches of the wrong slope can send a lot of water to the foundation. Regrading is one of the most effective and affordable waterproofing steps, and in many Nashville neighborhoods with clay soil it is the first thing we check, because clay holds water against the wall long after the rain stops.
We measure the slope along each wall with a level, a string line and a laser or stakes. We plan to build up low soil near the foundation and slope it away, keeping the soil line below the siding or brick edge and above any weep holes. We bring in suitable clay-rich fill, place it in layers, compact it and shape swales where water needs to travel. We fix settled areas near walks, patios and steps and finish with sod or seed and straw. We also check gutters and downspouts, because grading and roof water work together.
